Louisiana Artists for Puerto, a program of CreActiv, LLC, is spearheaded by poet and media professional, Leslie D. Rose, who is of Puerto Rican descent. Its mission is to keep the need for support at the forefront of the conversation. Louisiana has experienced more than its fair share of natural disasters. As Louisianans, we understand how long recovery actually takes, and we know that the island of Puerto Rico has many years of restoration to come. As artists, we are passionate people who have the superpower of empathy. Through this initiative, we mix our artistic passion and lived experiences to continually uplift and support our island family. At this time, Puerto Ricans are still in the emergency phase of recovery. We are here to promote events, campaigns, fundraisers, and community initiatives to continuously benefit this cause.
Louisiana Artists for Puerto Rico is inspired and supported by the#PoetsForPuertoRico movement that was started in New York City by three Latinx artists – Denice Frohman, Noel Quinones, and Willie Perdomo. It is a necessary way of sending our community a message – sometimes the poetry is about more than the poetry. What does it serve? In this case, poetry has thus far fed communities as well as funded sustainable agriculture. It is a true community effort to raise funds and consciousness. It has since gained national traction with events having been launched in NYC, Philadelphia, the Bay Area, Chicago, San Diego, and New Jersey, among other locations.
Stay tuned for the next Louisiana Artist for Puerto Rico event!
